Nyiragongo Volcano Eruption
On May 22, 2021, an 11-foot-high volcano, erupted in Goma, province of North Kivu, in DR Congo. With so much loss and the displacement of residents following the eruption, Bright Lights for Africa saw a desperate need within the community, and kickstarted a fundraiser to raise funds to support the victims. With support from kind donors, we successfully provided immediate relief items such as food, water and sleep items as displaced residents sought shelter in neighbouring towns.
In our efforts to continue to support communities, our volunteers visited the district of Nturunga, Goma on September 12, 2021 (four months after the eruption) to provide additional relief items. We met with Father Jean Baptiste Bahati of Paroisse notre dame de l’espérance, who has displaced residents listed in his shelter, who still lacked some necessities. We visited these residents and donated foodstuff and water to help alleviate the burden on the shelter in meeting the needs of the victims.
